2017 PARENT INITIATIVES IN EDUCATION (PIE) GRANT
GUIDELINES
Each year the Minister for Education and Child Development makes funds available for the Parent
Initiatives in Education (PIE) grants. The grants support schools and their communities to develop
innovative projects or new initiatives to encourage and increase parent/carer engagement in student
learning and schools.
Applications from schools will be considered by the PIE Grant Selection Panel provided they are
received by the closing date, and address the following criteria.
Schools may submit more than one application.
All applications that meet the criteria will be considered, however, if total of funds requested
exceed the amount available for distribution, priority will be given to schools not funded in the
2016 PIE Grant process.
Criteria
Applications must:
 be initiated by formal parent/carer groups for example School Boards, Parents and Friends
Associations or individual parents /carers
 have a clear focus on parental /carer engagement in children’s schooling and education
 indicate that there is support for the program from the school Principal or delegate
 include a detailed and well constructed budget (refer to page 3 for funding criteria).
The PIE Grant selection panel will give consideration to the following in assessing and comparing
applications against the criteria:
 Does the application support families to build on their capacity to assist and encourage
children’s learning?
 Does the application have processes to engage parents/carers currently not actively
involved in the life of the school community?
 Does the initiative support participation of parents/carers in decision making processes
within the school community?
 Does the application trial initiatives which provide opportunities for parents/carers and
schools to develop community partnerships that enhance learning opportunities?
 Does the application align with the school’s broader parent engagement strategy?
