ORDER FORM - WORLD POPULATION PROSPECTS DATA ON CD

ORDERING THE WORLD MORTALITY REPORT 2007
CD-ROM Edition – Datasets in Excel and PDF formats
The World Mortality Report 2007, prepared by the
United Nations Population Division, provides a
comprehensive set of mortality estimates for the
world’s countries and their aggregates, along with an
inventory of the availability of primary data for the
estimation of adult and child mortality at the national
level.
The Excel files in this CD-ROM Edition are organized into two main groups: Mortality Indicators and
Data Inventory. A third folder contains files in
Adobe Acrobat PDF format that also present, in a
different layout, relevant mortality indicators and
information from the data inventory.
For a complete list of data files and their content,
see tables 1 and 2 below.
All mortality estimates contained in this CD-ROM
are based on the results of the 2006 Revision of
World Population Prospects 1 and provide an overview of levels and trends of mortality between 1950
and 2005. The CD-ROM contains the following mortality indicators: total deaths; crude death rates; infant mortality; under-five mortality; life expectancy
at birth by sex; life expectancy at exact ages 15 and
60; survival probabilities between selected exact
ages; and life table survivors by sex and age. Estimates are provided for each quinquennium over the
period 1950-2005 for total deaths, crude death rates,
infant mortality, and life expectancy at birth; for the
remaining indicators, estimates are provided only for
1995-2000 and 2000-2005. Data in the Excel files
refer to 195 countries or areas that had populations of
100,000 inhabitants or more in 2007. The Excel files
also contain estimates for 33 country aggregates,
including the world as a whole, the development
groups, the major areas and geographical regions;
these aggregates include 34 countries and areas with
populations below 100,000 inhabitants in 2007.
The PDF file entitled WMR2007_I_COUNTRY
_PROFILES.PDF presents compilations of selected
indicators for each of the 195 countries or areas with
100,000 inhabitants or more in 2007.

The Data Inventory contains information on the
availability of data for the estimation of adult and
child mortality for the 195 countries or areas that had
populations of 100,000 inhabitants or more in 2007.
The inventory is presented at the country level in the
PDF
file
entitled
WMR2007_III_DATA
_INVENTORY.PDF. Each country in the PDF file
contains two panels. Panel A lists years in which a
population census was conducted and years for
which data on deaths by age and sex were available
from vital registration systems. Panel B lists other
sources of primary data for mortality estimation, that
is, censuses and surveys that collected data permitting the estimation of mortality. For each census or
survey, panel B indicates which of the following
types of data were collected: maternity histories; retrospective reports of deaths in the household; and
survival of close relatives, including children,
mother, father, siblings, and spouses. The Excel file
WMR2007_DB2_F1_DATA_INVENTORY.XLS contains the information from panels A and B in a
spreadsheet format that can be filtered on variables
such as major area, country name, survey family,
data type, or year.
A further set of files provides summary tables of
the data inventory for both countries and major areas.
The
PDF
file
WMR2007_IV_SUMMARY_
TABLES_ON_DATA_AVAILABILITY.PDF presents,
for each major area and each decade since 1950, the
number of countries and percentage of total population for which various types of information are available for estimating adult and child mortality. The
same file also provides a classification of countries
by category of data available for estimating adult
mortality. The Excel file WMR2007_DB2_F2_SUMMARY_DIAGRAMS_AND_TABLES.XLS
provides
two additional summaries of the inventory information. First, it contains two diagrams that give, for
each country, a visual presentation of the data available for each year from 1950 to 2007. Second, it contains five summary tables—one for each major
area—that list every country known to have collected
each listed type of data, by period.
